Science Olympiad
Member, Captain, Advisor, President
Science Olympiad has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. The competition combines STEM concepts through builds, lab, and test activities where you can learn science hands-on while having fun with your teammates. I was introduced to the event in 4th grade, and I've been participating ever since. I have served as Science Olympiad Captain in Middle School, Science Olympiad Advisor in freshman year, and am now serving as Club President for my high school junior and senior years.
Each year I get to help new and old members get acquainted, come up with blueprints and strategies, and test models like the ones below. Science Olympiad allows me to combine some of my favorite skills, such as creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. My favorite events are the engineering ones, including the Bottle Rocket and Bridge building events, but I am always happy to fill in for all events when necessary.
Since I took over the club, I've been able to rebuild the club from not even being registered to filling all the club positions, enlisting full teams, and assigning regional event leaders. During my Senior year, I hope to shoot for gold and more silverware for the science olympiad closet.
Freshman + Sophomore Year
During freshman year of high school, Science Olympiad was entirely in a virtual form. During that year, my teammates and I participated in the competition from home on video calls. I competed in Machines, an event based on the math behind simple machines like levers and pulleys, and Designer Genes, an event based on topics in cell biology like cell division, phenotype, and DNA structures. After the competition, I became an advisor for the Science Olympiad Club in my freshman year.
In my sophomore year, we weren't registered for the event as our president missed the registration deadline and so we couldn't participate, sadly. However, that wasn't the end of my Science Olympiad journey.
Junior Year
During my junior year of high school, I became President of the club, and our team competed in person at the NC Science Olympiad Regional Finals. I participated in Anatomy and Physiology and Dynamic Planet, where I replaced missing team members who were sick. I also participate in the Bridge building event - a staple for our club.
The 28 members researched, trained, and prepared for this event during lunchtime at school and attended after-school workshops that I hosted over the school year. In 2023, our team won 7 medals in three events: Forestry, Code Busters, and Dynamic Planet.
Senior Year
